Sony says PS3 is hard to develop for – On Purpose!?!

by Historian on Mar.01, 2009, under Collecting, Video Games, Weird Stuff

In one of the most shocking and bizarre comments ever made by a company chief, Hirai, the brains behind the entire PlayStation empire, explained to the Official PlayStation Magazine in its February issue that Sony didn’t want to make it easy on developers.

"We don’t provide the ‘easy to program for’ console that (developers) want, because ‘easy to program for’ means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so then the question is, what do you do for the rest of the nine-and-a-half years?" explained Hirai.

So let me get this straight.. It is hard to develop for .. on purpose? You want your console system to succeed and then you make it difficult to bring games to it. Wouldn’t letting “anyone take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do” be an advantage? Open it up to the Independent developers, see what they can do. XNA is sucessful because they tried to make it easy to develop for the Xbox 360.

Sony, you have officially convinced me to not Purchase a PS3 or a PSP(2) any time in the near future. With Final Fantasy Coming to the 360 and frankly only one game that remotely looks interesting, Little Big Planet, I can honestly say that there is no compelling reason to invest in your hardware…

Or your philosophy.

Giant Atari Joystick Lamp

by Historian on Jan.07, 2009, under Gadgets, Weird Stuff

FJOVLHUFPKFCZPB_MEDIUMYou know sometimes there is a strange feeling you get.. somewhere between awe and horror. As a avid game collector, this is an awe inspiring project. As someone who likes to think they have some sense of style, I would be horrified to find this in my home.

I wanted to make something to enter into the Craftsman contest that would be challenging for me to make, but really cool and unique to have once it was finished. This was what I came up with.

I have a few basic hand tools and a few small power tools. I started this project doubtful of how I was going to accomplish each step with my relatively small supply of tools, but I came up with some creative ways to use them to get what I wanted. I did have to practice making most of the parts multiple times before I got them the way I wanted them. This was by far the most difficult and time consuming thing I’ve ever made, but I’m very pleased with the result.

Taurean Dog

by Historian on Jul.03, 2008, under Weird Stuff

I think everyone has an interest in horoscopes. For some it may an interest in stomping it from the face of the planet for its blasphemous ways and others a thing to rules their lives. For me it is a passing amusement, purely entertainment. That said it is often striking when they reveal something that seem to be largely true.

Tonight in my wandering of the Internet I cam across a Chinese Horoscope page. I’m a Metal Dog which goes something like this:

Metal Dogs have extremely high standards and expect a lot of themselves and of others. They are loyal and hold a strong outlook about the direction they want their life to take. They choose their friends and causes with care, as they do not plan to ever not support these people and things again. Once they have committed themselves, there is little to no turning back. They are bold, unafraid to disagree out loud about anything they feel is unjust or unfair. Metal Dogs are easily stressed if a plan does not go accordingly. They find it difficult to relax when there are things to be done.

And of course in Sun sign astrology I’m Taurus. Which I will leave to you to look up, if you so desire. But what really got me caught my attention tonight was the blending of these two, the “Taurean Dog”

These Dogs are more conventional in how they view the world. They are heroic community leaders and concerned neighbors. They are stable and resilient in their search for truth and justice.

Amusing isn’t it… But I have to admit not quite as uncanny as my Myers-Briggs (Jung) Typology… but that is for another day.

Are you the 26?

by Historian on Apr.03, 2007, under Weird Stuff

For about a month now we’ve been getting these stupid tv commercials where a female voice repeats "Beware the 26" over and over with the words on a field of static, it then drops to a color test screen. And there have been bill boards that looked spray painted with the same message.

Turns out is was a pathetic marketing campaign by the local newspaper.

Fearful of losing readers to the world of online news it claims that 26% of us are under a "crazy misperception" that "newspapers are yesterday’s news".

The truth is 26% of us know that the online world is a more efficient way of getting the news we want the way we want it. In fact I haven’t been to the local news web site, save for the monstrosity of "bewarethe36.com" in a very long time.

And this certainly isn’t going to get me there…

If they had bother to spend the money making their web site less cluttered and easy to use then it would have been money well spent.
